1. Never draw a bow with an arrow nocked to the string anywhere other than astride the shooting line.
2. Always point the bow and arrow toward the target when loading (nocking) an arrow to the bowstring!
3. Always aim at the target - arrows can go a long way!
4. Never shoot an arrow straight up in the air; it has to come back down again.
5. Never draw a bow and let go without an arrow on the string (dry loose).
6. Anyone not shooting should stay well behind the shooting line.
7. Do not start shooting until the Field Captain indicates that it is safe to do so - usually a single whistle blast.
8. Do not move in front of the shooting line until shooting is complete. The Field Captain will indicate that it is safe to move to the targets by two whistle blasts.
9. If you are shooting and hear the command 'FAST' or another single whistle blast then you MUST stop shooting. If you are at full draw do not release the arrow - just relax the draw whilst lowering the bow-arm (i.e. “come down“). Perhaps someone entering the range area, a stray animal or perhaps some problem at the target area caused this reaction. So, if you see a potential danger in the range area then YOU should shout 'FAST' - the Field Captain may not have seen the danger you have seen!
10. Always walk to the side of the target to collect arrows. Look for and avoid stepping on arrows that have landed in front of the target.
11. If someone is withdrawing arrows from the target then always stand to the side of the target! The arrow often frees with a jerk and could cause injury to anyone standing close-by (particularly the eyes). The person pulling arrows should always look to make sure there is no-one behind them.
12. When setting up the range caution signs and red flags should
always be set up where they can be easily seen. A waiting line should be set
up five Metres behind the shooting line.
